Sixth seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada beat fifth seed Maja Chwalińska of Poland 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinal of the WTA 500 tournament in Singapore on hard court. The victory sent the Canadian into the final.
How the score changed
Chwalińska took the first set 6-1. In the second set, Fernandez turned the match around, winning 6-4. In the deciding set, the Canadian was stronger and completed the match with a third-set win, 6-2. The final set score was 2:1 in Fernandez's favor.
On her way to the semifinal, Fernandez defeated Kyoka Okamura (6-2, 6-3), Alicia Parks (6-4, 6-3) and Mirra Andreeva (6-2, 7-5). After beating Chwalińska, she met Talia Gibson in the final and defeated her 7-5, 6-0, finishing the tournament with a win in the final.
Before the semifinal, Chwalińska beat Rebecca Šramková (6-4, 6-2), Alexandra Oliynykova (6-0, 6-1) and Elise Mertens (6-2, 6-2), but lost to Fernandez in their match.
This was the only head-to-head meeting between Fernandez and Chwalińska, and it went to the Canadian.
