Maddison Inglis defeated Xinxin Yao in the first round of qualifying at the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing on hard courts 6-1, 7-5. The win sends the eighth seed through to the next round of qualifying.
Inglis raced ahead early, but the second set got tighter
Inglis took the first set with a comfortable margin, 6-1. In the second set Xinxin Yao stayed in the fight longer, but the Australian closed it out 7-5 to complete a 2-0 sets victory.
According to api.tennis, this was the pair's first meeting, with Inglis now leading 1-0 in their head-to-head. The match record also lists the score as 6-1, 7-5.
In her recent matches before Beijing, Inglis lost to Storm Hunter at the US Open and to Taylah Preston in the Vancouver final, while beating Mai Hontama in the Vancouver semifinal.
