Robin Montgomery of the United States defeated Spain's Aran Teixido Garcia in the first round of qualifying at the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing. The match finished 6-1, 6-3, with sets going 2:0. Montgomery is seeded twelfth in qualifying. According to rank.tennis, she is ranked 149th with 475 points. The tournament is being played on hard courts with a prize fund of $9.4 million.
Two confident sets
In the first set, the American conceded just one game to her opponent. In the second, Teixido Garcia took three games, but Montgomery still claimed the set. Over the course of the entire match, the Spaniard failed to win a single set. According to api.tennis, their head-to-head record now stands at 1-0 in Montgomery's favor.
For Montgomery, this victory snapped a losing streak. Before Beijing, she had fallen in the first round in Seoul to Sohyun Park 6-7(4), 3-6. At the US Open, the American lost in the first round to Maria Sakkari 6-2, 5-7, 2-6, despite winning the opening set.
Teixido Garcia arrived in Beijing after competing in Valencia. There she recorded two wins: over Diletta Cherubini 6-4, 6-0 and over Tessa Johanna Brockmann 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. She also lost to Clara Burel 6-7(3), 0-6 at that event.
