Vivian Wolff of the United States defeated Canada's Carol Zhao in the first round of qualifying at the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing 6-1, 6-1, advancing to the next round of qualifying. The tournament is played on hard courts and has a prize fund of $9.4 million, according to api.tennis.
Both sets ended with the same score. Wolff won the first set 6-1 and repeated that scoreline in the second. Over the course of the match, Zhao managed to win just two games, one in each set.
End of a losing streak
The win snapped a three-match losing streak for Wolff in opening rounds. Before Beijing, the American had lost to Oliynykova in Singapore (1-6, 6-7(1)), to Alice Tubello in Ljubljana (4-6, 3-6), and to Jeline Vandromme in Kitzbuhel (1-6, 6-7(3)). Zhao had also dropped her previous three matches, falling to Ye-Xin Ma in Seoul (3-6, 0-6), to Magda Linette in Montreal (6-4, 1-6, 4-6), and to Emerson Jones in Vancouver (3-6, 6-4, 4-6). In the latter two of those matches, the Canadian had pushed the contest to a deciding set.
According to rank.tennis, Wolff is ranked 228th with 328 points, while Zhao sits at 737th with 48 points. Wolff leads their head-to-head series 1-0.
