Frenchman Arthur Fils defeated Pole Kamil Majchrzak in the second round of Japan Open qualifying in Tokyo 6-2 3-6 6-1. The ATP 500 tournament is played on hard courts, with a prize fund of $2.4 million. Fils was seeded first in qualifying and sits 9th in the rankings with 3175 points. Fils won the first set 6-2. In the second, Majchrzak responded with a break of his own to take it 6-3, levelling the match. In the decisive set, the Pole managed to win only one game off the Frenchman: 6-1.
Form and head-to-head
Ahead of Tokyo, Fils won the title in Cincinnati. In the quarterfinals he beat Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-3 6-2, in the semifinals he got past Flavio Cobolli 6-3 6-4, and in the final he handled Frances Tiafoe 6-3 1-6 6-0. At the US Open, the Frenchman lost in the first round to Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 6-7 1-6 4-6, winning only the opening set.
Majchrzak beat Hamad Medjedovic 6-3 6-3 6-3 in the first round of the US Open, then lost in the second round to Valentin Vacherot 4-6 6-4 6-7 2-6. Before that he had lost to Benjamin Bonzi in Winston-Salem and to Christopher O'Connell in Cincinnati, both times by the same score, 4-6 6-7.
This was Fils' second win over Majchrzak in their head-to-head. Their only previous meeting came in 2026 in Doha, where the Frenchman also won in three sets, 6-7 6-3 6-4, after dropping the first set.
