Biography

Bernardo Casares was born on 12 November 1994 in Quito, Ecuador. He is right-handed and began playing tennis at the age of five; in his youth he trained at the Buenavista club. In 2009–2010 he won several tournaments of the South American junior circuit, and in early 2011 he won his first ITF junior title at the Bogotá City Cup. During that period he rose to 78th in the ITF junior rankings, spending the season among the strongest young players in the world. At the same time Casares tried himself in senior tennis: in 2010–2013 he played ITF tournaments, including in Ecuador and Brazil. His best senior singles ranking was ATP 1232nd, reached on 22 August 2011. At one of the home Futures tournaments in August 2011 he lost to Galo Barrezueta in the first round. Later Casares continued his sports career in US college tennis, representing Cornell University. In the 2014/15 season he earned a place on the All-Ivy League second team in doubles together with Chris Vrabel. In university competition he also met players from Columbia University, and in 2017 he played at the regional stage of the NCAA championship. On the senior professional tour he did not win titles; according to the available statistics his singles record at ITF tournaments is 23 wins and 24 losses. Casares's main achievements came in the junior period and college tennis: 78th place in the ITF junior rankings, the title of an ITF junior tournament in Bogotá, a career-high ATP ranking of 1232 and a place on the All-Ivy League doubles second team.
