Hugo Gaston

Biography

Hugo Gaston was born on September 26, 2000, in Toulouse. A left-hander, 173 cm tall, he started playing tennis at the Fonsorbes club, then moved to Blagnac. As a junior, he won the Orange Bowl (2017) and the junior Australian Open doubles title (2018, with Clement Tabur), and at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires he took gold in singles and two bronzes, in doubles and mixed doubles.

On the main tour, he drew attention at Roland Garros 2020: having beaten Stanislas Wawrinka, he reached the fourth round, where he lost in five sets to Dominic Thiem. In 2021, he played his first ATP final in Gstaad and reached the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters, beating Carlos Alcaraz along the way, breaking into the top 100. In 2022, at Roland Garros, he defeated Alex de Minaur and reached the third round, and in July he rose to a career-high ranking of 58th (July 11, 2022).

After that, his ranking dipped, and Gaston focused on Challengers: titles in Trieste (2023), Lyon (2024), Rennes and Brest (2025), finals in Iasi, Rome, Tulln and Barcelona earlier, as well as a second ATP final, in Kitzbuhel (2024), where he lost in three sets. His best Grand Slam result remains the fourth round of Roland Garros 2020; from 2023 to 2026 at the Grand Slams he has not gone past the third round (third round at Roland Garros 2026).

Gaston is currently in the top 100 of the singles rankings (101st place). In 2026, he reached the semifinal of the ATP tournament in Estoril. In total, he has one title and several finals on the Challenger circuit in recent years, as well as a rich collection of wins over top players, earned through his unconventional game built on an abundance of drop shots.
