Biography

Lara Schmidt was born on 13 October 1999 in Germany; sources give her place of birth as Lauf an der Pegnitz or Nuremberg. She is right-handed, uses a two-handed backhand and is 168 centimetres tall. She began playing tennis at the age of eight and prefers hard courts. She began her professional path in 2016. In junior tennis Schmidt made notable progress in 2017: she won a Grade 2 tournament in Istpere, where she beat the Canadian Carson Branstine in the final, and by the end of the season she had risen to No. 56 in the ITF junior rankings. In the same year she played the junior Roland Garros and Wimbledon. In Paris she came through qualifying, beating Anastasia Iamachkine and Viktoriya Moravyova, and in the main draw she met Elena Rybakina. In London she also came through qualifying, after which she played Katie Swan. At the junior level her overall record was 36 wins and 12 losses, and on clay she won 24 of 29 matches. In senior tennis Schmidt plays mainly ITF tournaments. In 2016 she received an invitation into the qualifying of the WTA tournament in Nuremberg, and in 2018 she made her main-draw debut at a WTA event in doubles with Julia Niemeier. On the ITF circuit she has won two singles titles: a W25 in Klosters and a W35 in Verbier. She has also reached two more finals. In WTA singles she rose to No. 478 on 22 April 2024, and in doubles she reached No. 928 on 19 May 2025. Schmidt's profile remains primarily a singles one: her main results and highest ranking achievement are linked to that discipline.
