Biography
Lyudmyla Kichenok was born on July 20, 1992, in Dnipropetrovsk (now Dnipro, Ukraine). She is right-handed and stands 175 cm tall. She has a twin sister, Nadiia, also a professional tennis player and her regular doubles partner early in her career.
As a junior, Kichenok won 4 singles and 11 doubles ITF titles, climbing to No. 30 in the junior rankings; in 2010, together with Elina Svitolina, she reached the junior doubles semifinal at Roland Garros. She made her senior tour debut in 2006, and her first titles came alongside her sister in 2009.
In singles, her results were modest: six ITF titles and a career-high ranking of No. 156 (July 21, 2014). From 2017 she focused on doubles. She won her first WTA title with her sister in Shenzhen in January 2015, followed by titles in Florianopolis (2016) and the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai (2018, 2019). From 2021 she partnered with Makoto Ninomiya (title in Nottingham), then with Jelena Ostapenko, winning titles in Cincinnati (a WTA 1000 event, 2022), Tallinn (with her sister, 2022), Eastbourne and Brisbane (both 2024).
Her biggest achievements came in 2023–2024: with Mate Pavic she won the 2023 Wimbledon mixed doubles title, her first Grand Slam trophy and the first for Ukrainian tennis at that tournament. In September 2024, with Ostapenko, she claimed the US Open women's doubles title, defeating Kristina Mladenovic and Shuai Zhang in the final, having earlier that season reached the Australian Open final with her. According to reports, she rose to No. 3 in the doubles rankings (September 2024), a career high.
Kichenok now has 11 WTA doubles titles and two Grand Slam trophies to her name, one in women's doubles and one in mixed doubles.
