Ryan Fishback

Biography

Ryan Fishback was born on 27 April 2002 and grew up in Geneva, New York. He played for the Geneva Panthers school team from seventh grade and compiled a 93–5 singles record, and in 2019, as a junior, he won the singles tournament of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association; the pandemic took his senior season away. By the time he entered university Fishback was considered a five-star recruit, the number one in his state, and he rose to No. 1 in the national rankings of his 2020 class. He spent his college years at Virginia Tech, where he studied biochemistry. He started in the sixth singles position of the team and then established himself in the first: his overall singles record is 34–28, of which 22 wins came at first court; in doubles he played for three years with Jordan Chrysostom (26–17). His final season, 2023/24, was the best: 18 wins, a rise to No. 56 in the college rankings, a win over the strong Filippo Moroni of Wake Forest, a place on the ACC third all-conference team and his first win in the main draw of the NCAA championship. For the second year in a row he won the ITA Atlantic Region singles championship. Throughout this time Fishback maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average and became the first in the history of the Virginia Tech tennis programme to receive the national ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership Award.
