Biography
Tomáš Macháč was born on October 13, 2000 in Beroun, Czech Republic. He is right-handed, uses a two-handed backhand, and stands 183 centimeters tall. Macháč took up tennis at the age of five and worked his way from Czech junior competitions to the professional tour, beginning his senior career in 2017. At the junior level, he climbed as high as ninth in the ITF world rankings. In 2017, Macháč won the prestigious Orange Bowl doubles title alongside compatriot Ondřej Štyler; he competed in all four junior Grand Slam events, with his best singles result coming at the US Open, where he reached the second round. His first major successes in adult tennis came on the Challenger tour. In 2020, he won the tournament in Koblenz and reached the final in Bratislava, and in 2021 he claimed the title in Nur-Sultan. During this same period, Macháč began breaking through regularly into ATP main draws and gradually established himself among the top players of his generation. The 2024 season proved to be his breakthrough year. In Geneva, he reached his first ATP singles final and along the way secured one of the most notable wins of his career, defeating Novak Djokovic. At the Masters tournament in Miami, Macháč reached the quarterfinals for the first time, and in Shanghai he advanced to the semifinals. He reached the fourth round at the US Open, and the third round at the Australian Open and Roland Garros. At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Macháč won gold in mixed doubles with Kateřina Siniaková and bronze in men's doubles with Adam Pavlásek. In October 2024, he rose to No. 25 in the ATP rankings; his career-high ranking later became No. 20, achieved on March 3, 2025. In doubles, Macháč has also broken into the top fifty of the world rankings. His game combines powerful baseline play, an aggressive return position, and the ability to quickly shift the pace of a rally. Key career highlights include his win over Djokovic, Olympic gold in mixed doubles, a semifinal run at the Shanghai Masters, and a fourth-round appearance at the US Open.
