Biography
Yassine Smiej was born on 7 January 2000 in Rabat. A right-hander, he is 173 cm tall. The Moroccan came to senior professional tennis through American college sport — a route typical of players at this level. He first played for Concordia University Irvine in NCAA Division II and became a truly notable figure there: in 2021 Smiej was named to the first team of the PacWest conference in both singles and doubles, and he received the conference Player of the Week award twice in one season — the only tennis player in the league to do so. At that time he was in the top 25 of the Division II college singles rankings and the top 20 in doubles. The next step was a move to Division I: at Loyola Marymount University he combined playing for the team with an MBA program and in the 2022/23 season played mainly at the first singles position. Smiej's professional schedule is built around ITF M15 and M25 tournaments — Morocco, Egypt, Poland and other countries, mainly on hard courts. His best position in the ATP doubles rankings is No. 922. Over his career he has won more matches than he has lost in singles; in doubles the ratio is the reverse.
