About the tournament
Tokyo — the ATP 500 Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships, held in Japan since the early 1970s. It was originally called the Tokyo Outdoor Grand Prix and was played on outdoor clay courts, taking on its current name, the Japan Open, in 1990. For many years its home venue was the Ariake Coliseum in Ariake Tennis Forest Park; since 2018, due to the area's preparations for the 2020 Olympics, the tournament has been hosted at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza on indoor hard courts. From 1979 to 2008 the tournament was held alongside a women's event, which was discontinued in 2019. Tokyo is one of the few ATP tournaments to have switched surfaces from outdoor clay to indoor hard over the course of its history.
