About the tournament
Rolex Shanghai Masters is an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, the only one in the series' calendar held outside Europe and North America. The tournament received its modern format in 2009, although the city had hosted professional tennis earlier: from 2005 to 2008 the ATP year-end championship (the Tennis Masters Cup) was held at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in the Minhang district, and the first professional competitions in Shanghai took place as early as 1996. Matches are played on outdoor hard courts, and the tournament is held in October. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic the tournament was not held in 2020–2022. The record for singles titles belongs to Novak Djokovic, with four wins (2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018). The tournament's prize money is one of the highest in the ATP Masters 1000 series calendar.
