Quito

About the tournament

M15 Quito is a regular hub tournament of the lowest level of men's professional tennis in the ITF World Tennis Tour series, held in the capital of Ecuador. The M15 category is the entry level of the ATP/ITF professional ladder, where young players just starting their careers compete, as well as veterans winning back ranking points after injuries or a dip in form; the prize money of such tournaments is minimal and the number of ATP points is small, but it is at this level that the foundation of the world ranking is laid. The tournaments in Quito are traditionally hosted by two clubs — Quito Tenis y Golf Club in the Condado sector in the north of the city and Club Terravalle in the Cumbayá district — both of which have outdoor clay courts, characteristic of the Latin American ITF calendar. Quito's high-altitude location (about 2,800 metres) creates specific playing conditions — the thin air makes the ball fly faster, which distinguishes local competitions from tournaments at sea level and attracts players training to adapt to altitude. During the season, several numbered editions in a row are often held in the city on the same courts, which is convenient for the organisers and allows players to minimise travel between tournaments. Information about specific editions is published through the websites of the host clubs and the ITF profile.
