Sharm El Sheikh

About the tournament

Sharm El Sheikh is a resort Egyptian city on the Red Sea coast that became one of the main winter “hubs” of the men's ITF Futures tour (now the ITF World Tennis Tour). Over many seasons in a row, several numbered tournaments in a row were played here (“Egypt F1”, “Egypt F2” and so on up to F30+), which is typical of resort venues with a dense calendar: the warm climate makes it possible to hold competitions all year round, and the low cost of accommodation and court rental makes the city attractive to organisers of serial lower-tier tournaments. The surface in Sharm El Sheikh is mainly outdoor hard courts, although in some years some of the Egyptian tournaments (mainly those in Cairo) were held on clay, so when analysing a specific event it is worth clarifying the surface separately. The prize fund of the tournaments was usually 10,000–15,000 dollars, which corresponds to the lower step of the professional ladder: it features young players just beginning their careers, veterans recovering from injuries or a dip in form, as well as strong representatives of the college and national level, including local Egyptian players. Such tournaments give points in the world ranking and are important for earning first ATP points. According to the available data, no separate permanent official website or social media accounts of the series have been identified — coverage of such tournaments is usually limited to the ITF database and results aggregators.
