About the tournament
M25 Heraklion is a men's tournament on the ITF World Tennis Tour in the M25 category, the third step of the professional ladder after the Grand Slams/ATP tours and Challengers, held regularly in Heraklion on the island of Crete (Greece). Heraklion is one of the "hubs" of the ITF calendar, where several tournaments are played one after another on the same courts during the autumn season (including several M15 editions and one or two M25s), which explains the large number of numbered editions over a relatively short span of years. The series of tournaments is held at a tennis club known as the venue for the "Nana ITF World Tennis Tournament": the complex has hybrid clay and hard courts overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, as well as accompanying sports infrastructure. Men's competitions in Heraklion are traditionally played on a hard surface on outdoor courts, while women's tournaments on clay are held in parallel in the same weeks. Mediterranean locations of this kind (alongside Antalya, Monastir and Sharm El Sheikh) are popular with organisers because of the mild climate in the off-season, the acceptable cost of staging events and the high density of the calendar, which allows players to earn ranking points for months without long journeys. Tournaments of this level feature mainly players outside the ATP top 200, young professionals and players restoring their ranking. Current information on individual editions is published on the ITF website.
