Burgas

About the tournament

W50 Burgas is a tournament of the women's ITF World Tennis Tour, held in the seaside city of Burgas on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The W50 category belongs to the lower-middle segment of the professional ladder: such tournaments give fewer ranking points than W75/W100, but noticeably more than the basic W15 level, and serve as an important step for players seeking to establish themselves in the top 300–500 of the WTA ranking or to return there after injuries. In Burgas, as along the Bulgarian coast generally, editions are traditionally held on outdoor clay courts — a surface typical for local clubs and convenient in terms of climate: the warm summer and mild autumn allow tournaments to be held without the risk of rain delays characteristic of more northern regions of Europe. Bulgaria in general is popular with ITF organisers thanks to the comparatively low cost of court rental, accommodation and logistics, which allows several tournaments to be scheduled in a row at one venue during the season — this is also characteristic of Burgas, where several numbered editions were recorded in different years. General information about the calendar is available on the ITF portal.
