Villeneuve d'Ascq

About the tournament

W35 Villeneuve d'Ascq is a women's tournament of the ITF World Tennis Tour series of the W35 category, held in the city of Villeneuve-d'Ascq in northern France, a suburb of Lille. The competitions are organised at the courts of the local club "La Raquette", and judging by the name of the venue, these are indoor hard courts — a typical option for the autumn-winter calendar in the French region of Hauts-de-France, where, because of the cool and rainy climate, lower- and middle-level tournaments traditionally move indoors. The W35 category occupies an intermediate position in the ITF professional ladder — above the starting W15/W25, but below W50/W60, so the main draw and qualifying here usually feature players from the middle and the second half of the first thousand of the WTA world rankings, as well as promising French youngsters and regional professionals using the tournament as a step for earning points. Judging by the numbering of the editions and the dense schedule in this region of France, the venue often hosts several ITF tournaments in a row during the autumn-winter block of the calendar, which is convenient in terms of logistics for players and organisers. No separate permanent official website or own social media for the tournament could be found — information about it is distributed mainly through the official ITF website and the regional tennis league of Hauts-de-France.
