Heraklion

About the tournament

W15 Heraklion is a tournament of the very first level of the women's professional ITF tour (W15 category), regularly held in Heraklion on the island of Crete, Greece. Heraklion is one of those tennis "hubs" where several numbered tournaments are played one after another on the same courts during the season — this allows players to train for months and earn ranking points without long journeys. Such series are typical for warm resort destinations with inexpensive logistics — such as Monastir in Tunisia, Antalya in Turkey or Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt; Crete has long performed a similar function for the European ITF calendar. It is known that the competitions in Heraklion are played on outdoor clay courts, although hard-court tournaments have also appeared in the calendar — the surface could differ for different series and years. The level of participants is typical for W15: players outside the first hundred or two of the world rankings, and young professionals and juniors gaining experience and WTA points. Such tournaments are usually organised by local tennis clubs with the support of the ITF and the national federation of Greece, often in tandem with parallel men's tournaments (Futures/M15) and other women's categories (W25, W40) as part of a single multi-week series. A separate permanent official website or social media accounts of the series itself could not be found — up-to-date information on each edition is published by the official ITF website.
