Lagos

About the tournament

W25 Lagos is a regular tournament of the women's ITF pro tour (ITF World Tennis Tour) in the W25 category, held in the city of Lagos, the largest metropolis of Nigeria. Competitions of this level are traditionally hosted by the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, a historic club with outdoor hard courts, at whose venue high-level men's tournaments were also formerly held, including Grand Prix and WCT events as early as the 1970s-1980s. The W25 category occupies the lower-middle rung of the ITF professional ladder: it is contested by young players just starting their careers, players outside the WTA top 300, as well as athletes recovering from injuries or using the tournament to earn ranking points in the off-season. Lagos as a hub is convenient for organisers thanks to the concentration of several numbered editions in a row on the same courts during the season; this reduces logistical costs for the club and provides participants flying in from afar with a series of matches without long journeys. The surface of the tournament is outdoor hard, traditional for this venue for decades. The tournament also contributes to the development of tennis in West Africa, giving local and regional players the opportunity to compete with foreign players without having to travel to other continents. Current information on the tournaments is published by the official ITF portal.
