About the tournament

W50 Lexington is a women's ITF-series tournament of a middle level for lower-tier competitions (W50), held in the city of Lexington, Kentucky, USA. Competitions of this rank are traditionally hosted by the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex, a venue that annually hosts a professional tournament which in parallel includes men's ATP Challenger Tour competitions and women's ITF/WTA events under various names over the years (including the "Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships" and the "Lexington Open"). The surface is outdoor hard courts. Such tournaments with prize money of about 50,000 dollars occupy an intermediate rung between the lower W15/W25 and the top WTA level, attracting players from the second to third hundred of the world rankings and young players earning points to reach the main draw of higher-level tournaments. Holding such competitions in Lexington is due to the developed university tennis infrastructure (the complex is connected with the University of Kentucky) and the long tradition of organising professional tournaments in this city, which reduces organisational costs and makes it possible to include the event in the dense summer calendar of the American hard-court season. The official website of the entire series of tournaments at this venue is lexingtonopen.org.
