Sao Luis

About the tournament

W15 São Luís is a women's professional tournament of the ITF World Tennis Tour, category W15, the entry level of the adult professional tour, held in the city of São Luís, the capital of the Brazilian state of Maranhão. The competition is hosted by a tennis club in the Quintas do Calhau district, on Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek Avenue. The surface is outdoor clay courts, typical for most Brazilian tournaments of this category: the tropical climate of the country's northeast allows competitions to be held practically at any time of year without the risk of rain and cold weather characteristic of southern Brazil. The tournament has existed for several years in a row (at least a fifth edition on this site is known), which is typical for Latin American W15 hubs: it is more cost-effective for organizers to hold several numbered tournaments in a row on the same courts, minimizing logistical expenses for referees, supervisors and the players themselves. These tournaments mostly feature young South American players at the start of their professional path, as well as players from Europe coming to earn their first ITF ranking points early in their careers. It is known that one of the editions was held with the support of the sponsor Santos Brasil. No official permanent website or social media specifically for the hub could be found; information about specific editions is published on the ITF website and by local organizers (for example, Instituto Sports) from season to season.
