Sharm El Sheikh

About the tournament

W15 Sharm El Sheikh is a lower-tier tournament on the women's ITF professional tour (W15 category, with prize money of around $15,000), regularly held in the resort town of Sharm El Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula (Egypt). It is a classic "tournament hub": over the course of a season, several numbered tournaments are played one after another on the same courts (Sharm El Sheikh 1, 2, 3, and so on), which is typical for Egyptian venues that host ITF tournaments almost year-round. This density of scheduling is explained by the mild climate, the accessible infrastructure of the resort hotel, and the relatively low cost of organizing competitions compared to Europe, which makes the region a convenient base for players building up ITF ranking points early in their careers. The tournaments were held at the Soho Square venue, on outdoor hard courts; in certain years (for example, in 2013) the competitions in this series were played on clay, which indicates that the court surface changed over time. Tournaments at this level mostly feature young players and athletes recovering from injuries or building up their ITF ranking, including local Egyptian players. Information on current draws is usually published on the ITF and WTA websites.
