Kyoto

About the tournament

W35 Kyoto is a women's tournament in the ITF World Tennis Tour series at the W35 category level, held in the Japanese city of Kyoto on courts that annually host an entire series of competitions under the umbrella name "Shimadzu All Japan Indoor Tennis Championships." The surface is hard indoor, which for Japan, where weather during winter and the off-season doesn't always allow for outdoor play, makes the venue convenient for staging tournaments on the calendar during the cold months. The category here varies from edition to edition: besides W35, tournaments at the W50, W60, and even W75 levels are organized at the same location in different years, which is typical for ITF "hubs," where the host club runs several numbered tournaments in a row so that players can conveniently stay in one city and earn points at multiple competitions at once. At the W35 level, the field is mostly made up of professionals ranked roughly between 200th and 600th in the WTA world rankings, including young Japanese players using home tournaments to collect ranking points, as well as players from neighboring Asian countries. The tournament can be followed through the ITF calendar and profiles on resources like WTA Tennis and Tenipo, where the draws and results of each individual edition are published.
