About the tournament
W50 Berkeley is a women's tournament of the ITF World Tennis Tour series in the W50 category, held in the city of Berkeley, California, USA. Competitions at this hub are traditionally hosted by the Berkeley Tennis Club, a club with outdoor hard courts known for having staged tournaments of various categories at this venue for many years, previously including the W60 category with a prize fund of 60,000 dollars. Tournaments here have taken place on outdoor hard courts as part of the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour, usually in late September. The W50 category occupies the lower-middle rung of the women's professional ladder: these tournaments feature players working their way toward the main WTA draw, as well as players rebuilding their ranking after injuries or breaks. California's climate with its mild autumn and the developed tennis infrastructure of the San Francisco Bay Area make Berkeley a convenient point on the calendar for holding a series of ITF tournaments back to back on the same courts, which reduces organizational costs and allows the club to host several tournaments per season. The club's official website is berkeleytennisclub.org.
