About the tournament

J500 Osaka (Osaka Mayor's Cup) is one of the most prestigious junior tournaments in the world, launched in 1993 as the World Super Junior Championships and immediately awarded the top Grade A category. The first edition was held in Fujisawa, where the winners were Marcelo Rios and local player Hiroko Mochizuki. Since 1996 the tournament has been held in Osaka, on the courts of the Utsubo Tennis Center, and since 2001 it has carried the name of the city's mayor. Under the 2019 reform, the category changed from Grade A to J500, and today it is one of seven tournaments at this level, comparable in significance to the ATP Masters and WTA 1000 tournaments among adults. The list of champions is impressive: junior titles here have been won by Marcos Baghdatis and Caroline Wozniacki (twice each), Victoria Azarenka and Marin Cilic, as well as Sebastien Grosjean, Jiri Vesely, Nick Kyrgios, Taylor Fritz, Michael Mmoh, Casper Ruud and Miomir Kecmanovic. The tournament is traditionally held on outdoor hard courts in late September to early October and remains a crucial stage in the development of future stars of the professional tour.
