The main story of the day: Leylah Fernandez became the WTA 500 champion in Singapore. The final against Talia Gibson was a contrast in two sets. The first set went to 7-5, while the second ended 6-0. According to api.tennis, Fernandez dropped only one set on her way to the title.

Fernandez's singles run

In the quarterfinals, Fernandez defeated Mirra Andreeva 6-2 7-5. In the semifinal against Maya Chwalińska, she lost the opening set 1-6. Fernandez then took the second 6-4, and in the third gave her opponent only two games: 1-6 6-4 6-2.

Chwalińska came into the semifinal without dropping a set. In the second round, she dealt with Alexandra Oliynykova 6-0 6-1, and in the quarterfinal she beat Elise Mertens 6-2 6-2. Mertens had beaten Barbora Krejčíková in the second round.

Finalist Gibson

Talia Gibson reached the final through two tiebreaks in the second round. She beat Victoria Morvayova 7-6(2) 7-6(1). In the quarterfinal against Maria Sakkari, Gibson dropped the second set but closed the match confidently: 6-1 4-6 6-2.

Matches where the score says it all

The tightest singles quarterfinal was played by Tatiana Prozorova. Against Xinyu Wang, she lost the first set 3-6. Prozorova then won the second 7-5 and edged the third 6-4. That match and Fernandez's semifinal against Chwalińska showed that losing the opening set did not decide the outcome.

Doubles

Erin Routliffe and Aldila Sutjiadi won the doubles title, beating Qianhui Tang and Yifan Xu 6-3 6-2 in the final. Their toughest match came in the round of 16. After losing 5-7, they took the second set 6-0 and beat Anna-Lena Friedsam and Alexandra Sasnovich 1-0(6). After that came a win over Joanna Garland and Su-wei Hsieh and a semifinal against Sophia Costoulas and Talia Gibson: 7-6(4) 6-3.

Qianhui Tang and Yifan Xu beat Fiona Ferro and Linda Fruhvirtova (6-4 6-2), then Storm Hunter and Desirae Krawczyk (6-3 6-1). In the semifinal against Miyu Kato and Ellen Perez, a 6-0 rout was followed by a 3-6 loss, and everything was decided at the end by 1-0(6). The 1-0 score in the third set was also needed in three other round of 16 matches. That was how Kristina Mladenovic and Alexandra Panova beat Ingrid Neel and Gijana Olmos (6-4 4-6 1-0(8)), and Sofya Lansere and Tatiana Prozorova beat Ulrikke Eikeri and Quinn Gleason (6-3 2-6 1-0(5)).
