The match was over in two sets. Arnaldi won the first 6-3. The second was even more one-sided: the Italian took it 6-1, with Tomic winning just one game.

Tomic had to come through qualifying to reach the main draw. In the first round, he beat Terence Atmane (6-3 4-6 5-3), then defeated Timofey Skatov (7-5 6-4) in the second round. Arnaldi played at the Japan Open before Shanghai. There, he beat Rei Sakamoto (2-6 6-4 6-4), then lost to Carlos Alcaraz (6-7 1-6). Earlier, he lost to James Duckworth (7-5 3-6 2-6 6-7) in the first round of the US Open.
