Frances Tiafoe beat Yannick Hanfmann in the round of 64 at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, an ATP 1000 event with a prize fund of $11.2 million played on hard courts in Shanghai. The American won 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the next round.

Two sets, the same score

Both sets ended 6-4 in Tiafoe’s favor, with no need for a deciding set. It was Hanfmann’s second match at the tournament. He opened with a three-set win over Kamil Majchrzak: 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. He was unable to sustain that fight for long against Tiafoe.

According to rank.tennis, Tiafoe is ranked 8th with 3380 points. Hanfmann, who was unseeded at this tournament, is 58th with 936 points. Before Shanghai, Tiafoe played at the Japan Open. There, he beat Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-4, then lost to Arthur Fils 3-6, 5-7 in the round of 16. Earlier, at the US Open, he reached the semifinals and lost to Ben Shelton 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 5-7.

The players’ previous head-to-head meetings were split evenly. In Shanghai in 2025, Tiafoe won 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, while in Stuttgart in 2024, Hanfmann won 7-5, 7-6.
