Fritz took the first set, winning it 6-3. The Greek levelled the match in the second set, winning 7-5. That set proved pivotal: instead of the match ending in the American’s favor, it went to a deciding set. Tsitsipas won it 6-3.
Before facing Fritz, Tsitsipas had beaten Kimmer Coppejans (6-3 7-5) and Luciano Darderi (6-3 6-4) in Shanghai. Unlike those matches, this time he had to come back after losing a set. Fritz beat Matteo Arnaldi 7-5 6-4 in the previous round.
