At the same tournament, Mirra Andreeva, ranked third by the WTA, comfortably beat Nikola Bartunkova in the semifinals, 6-2 6-2, to reach the final.
Flavio Cobolli, the ATP No. 6, was knocked out in Shanghai. He lost to Adrian Mannarino 1-6 6-4 3-6 in the round of 64 at the ATP 1000 event. The other top-10 players in action that day won their opening matches and advanced to the round of 32. Alexander Zverev (No. 2) beat Yibing Wu 6-4 7-6, Carlos Alcaraz (No. 3) defeated Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3 6-3, and Ben Shelton (No. 4) overcame Daniel Altmaier 6-3 7-6. Felix Auger-Aliassime (No. 5) had to come from behind after losing the first set against Camilo Ugo Carabelli, winning 4-6 7-6 7-5. Daniil Medvedev (No. 7) also recovered from dropping the opening set to beat Jan-Lennard Struff 4-6 6-4 6-3. Frances Tiafoe (No. 8) beat Yannick Hanfmann 6-4 6-4, while Arthur Fils (No. 9) got the better of Pavel Kotov 6-3 6-4.
Doubles: Beijing final features no outsiders
Both doubles semifinals in Beijing were won by teams from the top 10. Katerina Siniakova (No. 1 in the WTA doubles rankings) and Shuai Zhang (No. 5) beat Erin Routliffe and Aldila Sutjiadi 6-4 6-2. Gabriela Dabrowski (No. 4) and Luisa Stefani (No. 3) defeated Elise Mertens and Diana Shnaider (No. 8) 6-4 3-6 1-0(7). It was a mixed day for Mertens: she knocked out Swiatek in singles but fell one win short of the doubles final. In Shanghai, Marcelo Arevalo (No. 8 in the ATP doubles rankings) and Mate Pavic (No. 9) lost. They were beaten by Adam Pavlasek and Patrik Rikl 6-7 7-6 7-10 in the round of 32.
