Sonay Kartal defeated Anhelina Kalinina 7-5, 6-3 in the round of 64 at the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan to advance to the next round. The result was reported by api.tennis.
Closer contest in the opening set
The gap in games between the opponents was narrower in the opening set. Kartal's advantage became more pronounced in the second: she won the set again and wrapped up the match without a deciding set.
Kalinina is ranked higher, however. According to rank.tennis, she is 48th with 1087 points, while Kartal is 138th with 512 points. That gap did not stop Kartal from winning in Wuhan.
According to api.tennis, the head-to-head record is now level at one win apiece. In 2025, Kalinina beat Kartal 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-1; Kartal has now won the rematch.
